Instagram Creator Monetization: Complete Guide for Indian Creators
Every way Indian creators can earn on Instagram in 2026: Gifts, Subscriptions, live badges, branded content, Creator Marketplace, affiliate tools and off-platform income, with eligibility checked against Instagram's help centre.
Instagram pays creators in two very different ways. Some money comes from the platform's own tools, where fans pay you through the app. Most money, for most Indian creators, comes from brands that pay you to make content. Knowing which tools are actually open to you in India, and at what follower count, saves months of chasing features that were never available here.
This guide maps Instagram's monetization options specifically. For income beyond Instagram (YouTube, products, services, licensing), see creator monetization in India. Eligibility details below were checked against Instagram's help centre in September 2026. Features roll out gradually, so your professional dashboard is the final word.
Quick answer
Indian creators can earn on Instagram through Gifts on Reels (500+ followers, 18+), Subscriptions (10,000+ followers, 18+), badges in Live, branded content with the paid partnership label, brand discovery through Meta's Creator Marketplace (1,000+ followers), and affiliate product links where the rollout has reached your account. India is listed for both Gifts and Subscriptions. Instagram's performance bonuses are currently limited to creators in the US, Japan and South Korea. For most creators, brand partnerships remain the largest income line, with fan-funded tools adding smaller, more predictable amounts.
The Instagram monetization map
| Tool | Who pays | Minimum requirements (per Instagram) | Available in India? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gifts on Reels | Viewers, using Stars | Professional account, 18+, 500 followers, payout account | Yes, listed |
| Subscriptions | Followers, monthly | Professional account, 18+, 10,000 followers | Yes, listed |
| Badges in Live | Viewers during Live | Professional account, 18+, monetization policies | Check your dashboard |
| Branded content | Brands | Professional account, branded content policies | Yes |
| Creator Marketplace | Brands, via Meta's tool | Public professional account, 18+, 1,000 followers | Yes (worldwide where Meta ads operate) |
| Affiliate partnerships | Affiliate partners | Public professional account, 18+, over 1,000 followers, supported market | Rolling out; varies |
| Bonuses | Invitation; location and tax status in the US, Japan or South Korea | No |
Every tool also requires you to follow Instagram's Partner Monetization Policies, Community Standards and Content Monetization Policies. Accounts that primarily post content focused on children aren't eligible for Gifts, Subscriptions or badges. See Instagram's overview of eligibility for each monetization tool.
Fan-funded income: Gifts, Subscriptions and badges
Fan-funded tools pay you for loyalty, not reach. They work best when a meaningful share of your audience feels connected to you personally rather than to a single viral video.
- Gifts: viewers buy Stars and send virtual gifts on your Reels. Instagram pays creators US$0.01 per Star received, monthly. Good for entertaining, frequent Reels creators.
- Subscriptions: followers pay a monthly price for subscriber-only Reels, posts, Stories, Lives, broadcast channels and a badge. Good for creators with expertise or a close community.
- Badges: viewers buy badges during your Live videos, which highlight their comments and put them on your supporters list. Good for creators who go Live regularly.
Each has its own guide: Instagram Gifts for creators and Instagram Subscriptions for creators. For how badges fit a Live strategy, see the Live section of Instagram content strategy for creators.
Brand-funded income: branded content and Creator Marketplace
Sponsored content is where most Instagram creators in India earn the majority of their income. Instagram's role here is infrastructure: the paid partnership label for disclosure, partnership ad permissions if a brand wants to run your content as an ad, and Meta's Creator Marketplace for discovery.
- Paid partnership label: required by Instagram's branded content policies whenever you post content for a brand in exchange for something of value.
- Partnership ads: a brand boosts your post as an ad through your handle, with your permission. Price this separately from the organic post.
- Creator Marketplace: a Meta tool where brands search for creators and send projects. Your portfolio there works like a searchable media kit.
The creator side of the Marketplace is covered in Instagram Creator Marketplace, and making your profile convincing for brands is covered in Instagram creator portfolio. Pricing partnership ads uses the same logic as creator whitelisting.
Commerce income: affiliate links and product tags
Instagram's affiliate partnerships let eligible creators add affiliate product links to Reels and feed posts and earn a commission from the affiliate partner (Meta doesn't pay these commissions). Instagram says the feature is rolling out gradually and only in supported markets, so many Indian creators won't see it yet. Instagram will also hide a product tag if the product doesn't appear in your content or is out of stock.
Until native affiliate tools reach you, Indian creators usually run affiliate income through retailer and brand programmes, with links on a link-in-bio page or storefront and codes shared in Stories. See creator affiliate marketing in India and creator affiliate links for the trust side of this.

Bonuses: not currently an Indian income line
Instagram's bonus programme rewards the performance of Reels, carousels and single-image posts, but its rules require creators to be located and have tax status in the United States, Japan or South Korea. Posts claiming "Instagram pays Indian creators per view" are not describing an official programme. Treat any such offer from a third party with suspicion; see how to spot fake brand collaboration offers.
Which tools fit you: a stage-based view
UNDER 500 FOLLOWERS: build a niche and format; brand-ready profile; small paid or gifted collaborations with clear disclosure 500+ (Gifts eligible): turn on Gifts if your Reels are entertaining or helpful enough that people want to thank you 1,000+ (Creator Marketplace eligible): complete your Marketplace portfolio; pitch brands directly as well 10,000+ (Subscriptions eligible): launch Subscriptions only if you can deliver a monthly promise ESTABLISHED: long-term brand partnerships, partnership ads priced separately, your own products and an owned audience off Instagram
The thresholds are Instagram's minimums, not signals that a tool will earn meaningful money. A 12,000-follower finance educator with a trusting audience may do well with Subscriptions; a 200,000-follower meme page may earn little from them and more from Gifts and brand deals.
Don't build the whole business on one app
Every tool above depends on Instagram's policies, reach and eligibility rules, which change. Use Instagram to earn and discover, but move your most engaged followers somewhere you control: an email list, a WhatsApp or broadcast community, or your own website. Creator audience ownership explains the logic; the creator funnel explains the mechanics.

Money, tax and records
Payouts from Gifts, Subscriptions and badges arrive through the payout account you set up in the professional dashboard. Subscription payouts are listed for the 21st of the following month. For in-app purchases, Apple and Google take their fees (typically 30% per Instagram's help pages), and Instagram's own revenue share on Subscriptions and badges is currently listed as 0%. All of this is income: keep monthly records by source. See GST for creators, TDS for creators and creator business expenses.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a feature seen in a US creator's video is available in India.
- Turning on every tool at once and mentioning all of them in every post.
- Skipping the paid partnership label on brand content, including gifted products.
- Pricing partnership ads as if they were the same as an organic post.
- Measuring monetization by follower count instead of by which tools your audience actually uses.
Conclusion
Instagram monetization in India is a mix: fan tools (Gifts, Subscriptions, badges) for loyalty, branded content and Creator Marketplace for brand income, and affiliate tools where they've rolled out. Check your professional dashboard, add one tool at a time, and keep building an audience you own alongside it. For the brand side of the same ecosystem, see Instagram creator marketing for brands.
